Great Racing. Great Potluck. Great Band. Interesting Weather!
What can I say. 3 out of 4 isn't bad. The Alaska Cup Regatta Weekend was Great!
Saturday was highlighted with 0 to 28 kts of wind, with rain of course, but the wind didn't arrive until 3:00 PM. At first it looked like one of those days where nothing would happen, but the weatherman was right, eventually, and the wind came busting in from the south. It was worth waiting for, giving everyone a chance to race with reefed sails. The race was over quickly enough with 7 boats participating and getting back into the harbor on schedule.
Sunday looked better for wind in the morning but as we approached the start of the first race it died and some of us were caught with our smaller jibs while the smarter ones gambled that the wind wouldn't build. They were right! Mirage trounced the fleet. The second race of the day, which was the last of the three races, looked like it would stay around 4 knots, so sails were changed again on some boats and of course the wind kicked up to 13 kts by the time the fleet reached the weather mark!. So much for Seward's predictable winds.
Three exciting, fun, tactical, well sailed races were pulled off with all boats having their good moments and bad, which makes it fun. Kinda like golf. All you need is one good hole to keep coming back.
The pot luck and live music provided by Mark Ward, Murray Kaplinger, Sean Kalkhorst, and Steve Padrick was exceptional and kept us going till around ... Midnight??
