A New NOAA weather Radio TRANSMITTER was installed on Rugged Island, at the end of Resurrection Bay in mid October 6, 2002 and broadcast started in May 2003 on Channel 4.  In addition, the NOAA Seward transmitter located near 4th of July Creek, had its power increased from 330 Watts to 1000 Watts in August of 2002.  Channel 1.

The net effect of these changes is enhanced coverage for the Kenai Fjords.  There are still dead spots with no access to NOAA radio, but coverage has been SIGNIFICANTLY improved via channel 4 in to Aialik Bay.  See maps below.

In addition, if you find yourself in the Gore Point area, use can sometimes now pick up Homer (Channel 1).  The Homer NOAA transmitter has also had its power increased to 1000 Watts.

The addition of Rugged Island is part of an ongoing effort to expand NOAA Weather Radio coverage in the State of Alaska.   The National Weather Service (NWS) and U.S. Coast Guard are partnering to establish a network of low-power five-watt NOAA Weather Radio transmitters at 27 USCG "high" sites located from the Dixon Entrance to Bristol Bay. These low power transmitters will operate on standard NWR frequencies under joint licensing with the NWS. The NWS will provide a continuous broadcast audio stream containing the standard NOAA Weather Radio weather information using the NWS automated voice system.
