With a perfect 15 knots southerly, Saturday saw the return of the “annual” Rum Doodle sailboat race in Resurrection bay.Three boats competed in this all-women's event, Williwaw, Radiance and Justice.Linda Kumin and daughters raced Williwaw, taking first place honors racing in honor of the late Jon Kumin.Deborah Altermat raced Justice with an experienced crew and took second place honors, while Dana raced Radiance with a complete novice crew ranging in age down to 3-1/2 year old Piper.
All teams had a great time and were treated to magnums of Champaign from the Williwaw crew. Then after the race, original Rum Doodle racers Bill and Nancy Schoephoester (owners of the boat Rum Doodle,) hosted the cocktail party with drinks and appetizers, followed by a fantastic spread of gourmet food courtesy of Walter Heinz who volunteered his efforts in the kitchen helping to make this year’s event a wild success. The women from all teams were already talking about next year and recruiting other boats for the event.Deb Altermat may have an upcoming article in the Seward Log and possibly something the Anchorage Daily News.Good job to all who participated as a great time was had by all!
